Products From Malawi

Welcome, from the Hodges family!  We will be returning for a short trip and are looking to bring back some nice products from Malawi.  If you are interested in getting something, let us know!  By purchasing an item, you not only help to support us and our work in Malawi, but you are also helping to provide for Malawian families who make their livelihood creating these beautiful works of art.  If you would to receive our quarterly newsletter, please sign up on the right-hand side of this page.  Donations can also be made by clicking HERE.

Below is a quick summary of where the different pieces of artwork come from.

CARVINGS

The carvings we can obtain include plaques with scripture, crosses with sayings, Nativity scenes, animals, coasters, letter openers, bowls, and serving utensils (if you have another idea of something you want, let us know.  We can always ask!).  Most of these items are made in the central region of Malawi, near the town of Salima (starred in the map below).  See below for a map showing the location.

 PAINTINGS

Paintings are handmade by Malawians.  These come from different regions throughout the country, and are absolutely beautiful. These pieces are original works of art, not prints.  The typical designs we see are animal paintings, African sunsets on the lake, village life, and women carrying things.  As with the carvings, if there is another design or specific color you are interested in, let us know!

TAILORING WORK

Charles, a Malawian that we have become friends with, creates the majority of the fabrics that we sell.  The chitengi (fabrics) he uses is produced in Zambia, then carried to Lilongwe, Malawi (can be seen in the map above).  All proceeds of these sales go to him and his family to help provide for school fees and food.  If you have a specific request (i.e. shirt or shorts), let us know, plus your sizes if necessary.

POTTERY

We have never brought pottery back with us due to how fragile it is, but there is a local pottery company named Dedza Pottery.  They employ many Malawians and train them in crafting the pottery and painting it.  They take any orders, and can create mugs, plates, bowls, and anything else you may think of.  They stamp the bottom with their logo, so it will always be a reminder of where it is from.  If you are interested in any pottery or have questions about possibilities, let us know!

Again, if you have any questions regarding the wonderful crafts available in Malawi, please do not hesitate to contact us.  We thank you so much for your interest in our missionary work in Malawi.
